As a result of a massive missile and drone attack on January 20, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant completely lost its external power supply, and electrical substations critical for the nuclear safety of Ukrainian NPPs were also damaged, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported, citing the agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi.
“Several Ukrainian electrical substations vital for nuclear safety were affected by widespread military activity this morning,” the IAEA said on social media platform X on Tuesday.
In addition, according to Grossi, the Chornobyl NPP completely lost all external electricity supply.
“The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant lost all off-site power and power lines to other NPPs were also impacted ,” the post read.
Grossi stated that the IAEA is actively monitoring the situation to assess its impact on nuclear safety.
