In Ukraine, the volume of freight transport from January to July 2025 fell by 12.6% compared to the same period last year – to 181.2 million tons.
According to the State Statistics Service, freight turnover during the reporting period decreased even more – by 13.5%, to 94.37 billion ton-km. While in July the cargo volume slightly narrowed the gap compared to last year – by 0.8 percentage points (p.p.), freight turnover lag increased by 0.8 p.p.
Rail transport remains the leader in freight volume – 92.5 million tons, which is 11% less than in the first seven months of last year. Ukrzaliznytsia explains the faster drop in freight turnover by a higher share of shorter shipments to ports.
Road transport over the seven months transported 66.7 million tons of cargo, 11% less than last year, although the decline in freight turnover is smaller – only 4%, indicating an increase in the average distance of road shipments.
The number of passengers transported in the first seven months of 2025 amounted to 1 billion 261.8 million, 0.4% more than in the same period in 2024.
Passenger turnover increased more significantly – by 5.3%, to 26.24 billion passenger-km.
Among transport types, the largest passenger volumes remain in urban electric transport – 688.1 million (+0.3% compared to the first seven months of last year) and road transport – 536 million (+0.9%).
Growth in urban electric transport was ensured by the metro, which showed a 5.6% increase – to 189.8 million, while trolleybus transport decreased by 0.1% – to 317.7 million, and trams – by 4.3%, to 180.6 million.
Rail transport, including urban electric trains, transported 37.3 million passengers in the first seven months of this year, 4.9% less than in the same period last year.
