Occupied Nova Kakhovka was partially flooded, as the Russians do not allow the repair of hydraulic units at the Kakhovka HPP. This was announced by the Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksiy Gromov.
Russia has been insidiously committing war crimes since the first day of its invasion of Ukraine. The attack and seizure of nuclear infrastructure, namely the Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plants, and the Kakhovka hydroelectric plant, are a direct violation of Article 56 of the Protocol to the 1949 Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Installations and Facilities Containing Dangerous Forces.
During the briefing, he stressed that the occupiers are not making any efforts to keep the captured facilities in a safe condition, which could lead to an environmental catastrophe.
"Currently, large volumes of water are being dumped at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant seized by the occupiers, as two hydraulic units are not working, which the occupiers do not allow to repair," Gromov said.
He noted that the activities of the occupiers have already led to partial flooding of Nova Kakhovka, the waterfront and the local park.
"Surrounding villages and the occupied city of Kherson are under threat," Gromov said
