Ukrainian Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Svitlana Hrynchuk, and the Minister of Environment and Gender Equality of the Kingdom of Denmark, Magnus Heunicke, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between their ministries.
“We have a long history of cooperation with Denmark, including on water supply for the southern regions of Ukraine, as well as on the path of European integration. To formalize and officially solidify our collaboration, we agreed with our Danish partners during COP29 in Azerbaijan to develop such an official document. Today, in Poland, within the framework of an informal meeting of environment and climate ministers of the European Union member states, the corresponding Memorandum was signed,” Svitlana Hrynchuk wrote on her Facebook page.
Under the Memorandum, efforts will be strengthened in the following areas:
- Creation of a modern water resources monitoring system in Ukraine, including groundwater. Given the significant loss of water resources and constant threats due to the war, it is crucial for Ukraine to enhance this area in order to constantly operate with up-to-date data and make quick management decisions. Denmark is ready to support our country in this.
- Restoration and modernization of water supply and wastewater treatment infrastructure. Denmark is ready to share its experience and help develop effective strategies and implement innovative solutions and technologies.
- Pollution control. Together with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, we are already working on implementing a series of initiatives aimed at creating effective mechanisms to control industrial and agricultural pollutants.
Additionally, during the bilateral meeting, Denmark’s support for reforming Ukraine's water sector according to European standards was discussed, along with the importance of engaging the private sector from both countries and, consequently, attracting new investments into the development of water infrastructure.
“I am grateful to the Government and people of Denmark for their solidarity with the Ukrainian people and their continuous support. We will continue to exchange knowledge and experience, best practices and data, and together we will look for innovative solutions, which I am confident will become new successful cases of our partnership,” Svitlana Hrynchuk noted.
