Norway has announced an additional contribution of 100 million Norwegian kroner (about $10 million) for the restoration of the protective New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone strike.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the funds will be channeled through the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

“The funding will make it possible to restore safety systems at the Chernobyl NPP after the Russian drone attack in February 2025, which damaged the NSC over the destroyed fourth reactor unit,” the ministry said.

The ministry also recalled that at the end of April this year, the United States announced $100 million in funding for repairs to the Chernobyl confinement structure. In addition, during the International Chernobyl Conference on Recovery and Nuclear Safety, an agreement was signed with the EBRD for €30 million for the first stage of NSC restoration, with partners committing nearly €100 million in total pledges.

“Thank you to all international partners for their continued support and solidarity with Ukraine. These contributions are an important step toward strengthening nuclear and radiation safety not only in Ukraine but across Europe,” said First Deputy Prime Minister for Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
