In 2023, Ukrainians created 84,431 new articles for Wikipedia, bringing the total number of pages to over 1.3 million. This ranks Ukrainian Wikipedia 14th among 328 language editions of the online encyclopedia.
This information was reported on the website of the Wikimedia Ukraine NGO.
In December alone, 3,936 articles were created, securing Ukrainian Wikipedia the 12th position among all online encyclopedias.
Overall, Ukrainians garnered 1.188 billion page views for Wikipedia in 2023 (compared to 1.060 billion in 2022). The absolute annual growth amounts to 128 million views. Over the seven years, the popularity of Ukrainian Wikipedia has increased by 124%, more than doubling.
Yuriy Perohanych, the initiator of the creation and co-founder of the Wikimedia Ukraine NGO, notes that traffic decreases in the summer and rises during student exams. Peak views are particularly recorded in March (115.9 million) and May (114.0 million).
In 2023, there were 3.419 million edits made to Ukrainian Wikipedia, which is 249,000 fewer than in 2022. On average, there were 9,367 edits per day, 390 edits per hour, or one edit every 9.2 seconds.
Perohanych adds that the Ukrainian version of Wikipedia has the highest demand for content related to Ukrainian geography, history, culture and art, architecture, museum affairs, the military, and politics. Out of the 150 most popular articles worldwide, 80 are related to Ukraine, which is more than half.
"Wikipedia is a field of information warfare, one of the important fronts of hybrid warfare. Therefore, a kind of mobilization of Ukrainian patriots into a community of Wikipedia volunteer editors is needed," he adds.
