The individual who died as a result of Russia's strike on Kramatorsk was Ryan Evans, a member of the Reuters team covering the war in Ukraine, the news agency reported on the evening of August 25.
According to the report, Evans worked as a security advisor for the agency. He was killed when a missile hit the Sapphire Hotel, where he was with a team of six people.
Two other Reuters journalists were hospitalized, with one reportedly suffering serious injuries.
"We are urgently seeking more information about the attack, including in cooperation with Kramatorsk authorities, and are supporting our colleagues and their families," Reuters stated.
Evans, a former British military officer, had been working with Reuters since 2022, advising its journalists on security while they operated around the world, including in Ukraine, Israel, and at the Paris Olympics. He was 38 years old.
The agency expressed its condolences to Evans' family and loved ones:
"Ryan helped many of our journalists cover events around the world; we will miss him terribly."
Three other Reuters team members who were at the hotel during the strike are safe, according to the agency. Reuters cited statements from Ukrainian authorities that the strike was carried out by the Russian military, but noted that it "could not independently verify whether the missile that struck the hotel was launched by Russia or whether the strike on this building was deliberate."
Russian forces struck Kramatorsk on the night of August 25. The hotel, where journalists from Ukraine, the U.S., and the U.K. were staying, was hit.
Earlier, the Kramatorsk City Council reported that six people were injured as a result of the Russian missile strike on the hotel, believed to have been carried out by an Iskander-M missile.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the international community to condemn the Russian strike on the Kramatorsk hotel, where foreign journalists were present. According to a spokesperson for the Ministry, "targeted strikes on media have become a systematic tactic of Russia's war."
