Satellite images from Planet Labs show that Russia is actively expanding its nuclear facilities near European borders, according to LRT.

Media reports indicate that modernization has affected at least five bases, including the construction of new testing ranges and guarded railway stations.

Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonsson confirmed that the country has been monitoring these developments for some time and linked them to Russian investments in nuclear capabilities and the development of a new military doctrine.

Active expansion has been observed in the Kaliningrad region, where a major reconstruction took place at a suspected nuclear weapons storage site. According to Polish government data, about 100 tactical nuclear weapons are stored in the Kaliningrad region.

Other sites mentioned include the Osipovichi base in Belarus, where a nuclear weapons storage facility operated during the Soviet era, a nuclear weapons testing base in Novaya Zemlya, and the Kola Peninsula, where about 50 storage bunkers have been built for ballistic missiles intended to arm submarines.

According to Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, this is a reason to jointly discuss nuclear deterrence and capabilities in Europe.

On the Kola Peninsula, around 50 bunkers have been built to store ballistic missiles intended for the submarine fleet, according to the publication.
