The Lviv-based Skeiron bureau has digitized the caves of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Such a 3D model of the monument will help in its restoration in case of damage.
The object that could previously only be viewed from the inside now has its shape and volume fixed in 3D. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a monastery complex that belongs to the most important historical and religious sites in Ukraine. The Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a reflection of the long and important history of Ukraine and Christianity as a whole.
The history of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra begins in the 11th century when Anthony of the Caves settled in a cave he dug himself on the hills of the Dnipro River. Other Christian ascetics joined him, turning it into a system of interconnected underground passages linking cave chambers. There are two cave complexes - the Near and Far caves. When Anthony was joined by other brethren in the Far Caves, he moved to the neighboring hill and founded the Near Caves. The caves are located at a depth of 5 to 15 meters, and their total length exceeds 800 meters.
"Our team digitized the Near and Far Caves, allowing the reserve to obtain new data and deepen the understanding of their structure. This is important for the further preservation of the Lavra caves, as well as for scientific research. We are pleased to share that we have prepared a mini-film about the caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which can be found on our YouTube channel at the link in the bio. We would be very grateful for your support and sharing," the announcement reads.
The creation of a 3D model of the underground was initiated by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
