The Ukrainian National Intellectual Property and Innovation Office (IP Office) has registered a new geographical indication (GI) for the "Kherson Watermelon." This GI will apply to watermelons grown in the sandy soils of the Tavria region, specifically in the Skadovsk, Kherson, and Kakhovka districts of Kherson region.

The Kherson Watermelon is known for its high sugar content and firm flesh. Its rind is green with pale green stripes, and the flesh ranges from pink to deep red. The watermelon is exceptionally crisp and flavorful.

Vitalii Kindratiiv, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine, stated:

"The registration of the Kherson Watermelon as a geographical indication is a significant event for our agricultural sector. The watermelon, grown on the sandy soils of the Tavria region, has gained recognition for its uniqueness and has become a symbol of the resilience and dedication of Ukrainian farmers who continue to work under difficult wartime conditions."

He emphasized that this status provides producers with additional advantages, enhancing their competitiveness in both domestic and international markets. Local communities will benefit from increased tax revenues, contributing to regional economic development. For consumers, it ensures high quality and safety of the product.

The application for the geographical indication was submitted by the "Association of Kherson Watermelon Producers," whose members are currently defending their homeland from Russians on the front lines.

Olena Orlyuk, Director of the IP Office, noted, "The fact that the Kherson Watermelon has finally received geographical indication is very symbolic and truly hopeful. We have seen the damage inflicted by the Russian forces in Kherson region and continue to witness the region suffering from shelling. We have seen how Russia regularly steals Ukrainian heritage, such as the recent example of Melitopol cherries. At the same time, we believe that very soon, the occupied South will again be Ukrainian, and not only Ukrainians but also the world will enjoy the Kherson Watermelon. This GI, along with other Ukrainian indications, will be transferred to the EU for protection in European markets. Ukraine values and respects intellectual property."

As of now, there are 3,133 geographical indications listed in the State Register of Ukraine. Of these, 37 objects are registered directly through the national procedure, with 29 geographical indications specifically for products originating from Ukrainian territory.
