Since October 12, the European Union has begun the gradual implementation of a new border control system. In Ukraine, biometric data is already being collected at three checkpoints — Shehyni, Solotvyno, and Luzhanka.

This was reported by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, during a TV broadcast.

“The European Union has long discussed implementing such a system across all European and Schengen countries. Its rollout was partially delayed, but as of October 12, this system is being put into practice according to the EU’s decision,” he said.

Demchenko emphasized that the rollout cannot be completed immediately.

“This does not mean that on October 12 all checkpoints were connected to this system. Implementation will occur gradually. Regarding vehicle checkpoints along the border with Ukraine and European countries, only three checkpoints have joined the system so far: Shehyni, Solotvyno, and Luzhanka,” the spokesperson noted.

He added that no significant complications had been reported at the checkpoints where the new system has been implemented.

Demchenko explained that the system involves collecting biometric data (fingerprints, a photo of the person crossing the border), passport information, and data on border crossings. When border authorities have the necessary information, biometric data will be collected each time a person crosses the border.

“This is a unified database that will cover all European and Schengen countries, allowing border guards in different countries to access the necessary information about citizens crossing the border online,” the spokesperson added.

At the same time, he assured that the introduction of the new system will not affect visa-free travel.

“This is an additional control directly at the border to prevent the use of fake documents and to monitor more closely those who violate the terms of their stay in European countries.”
