Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a "preserved" FSB agent gathering intelligence on the border territory of Sumy region.
According to the investigation, he was recruited before the full-scale invasion by Russia and held a position in one of the united territorial communities until May 2022.
When part of Sumy was occupied, the offender left for Russia through an enemy checkpoint. In the aggressor country, he met with his FSB handler, receiving tasks for intelligence and subversive activities in Ukraine.
Claiming to be "captured" by the Russians, he returned to the border area still partially occupied, explaining his disappearance as being "in captivity" with the occupiers.
Following the enemy agent's tasks, while serving as deputy head of the UTC, he continued to gather information on the movements and armament of Ukrainian defenders near the border.
Later, to expand his capabilities, the traitor resigned from his position and joined a local agribusiness. Under the guise of work-related trips, he continued gathering information for the occupiers.
Using personal connections, the traitor collected personal data on military unit commanders and local community leaders.
SSU counterintelligence arrested the offender while attempting to transmit the geolocation of several units of the Armed Forces. The suspect's mobile phone, used for photographing objects and communicating with the FSB, was seized.
He transmitted photos and videos to the enemy through an anonymous messenger chat in the form of media files with markings on electronic maps.
The intelligence information was reportedly needed by the aggressor for preparing new aerial attacks and sabotage raids in Sumy.
The detained individual has been informed of suspicion under Art. 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed in wartime) and is in custody. He faces life imprisonment.
Comprehensive measures to expose the enemy agent were carried out by SSU employees in the Sumy region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
