Cybersecurity experts from the Security Service of Ukraine have thwarted attempts by Russian military intelligence to gain access to the combat data exchange system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As a result of comprehensive measures, unlawful actions by Russian hackers seeking to infiltrate Ukrainian military networks and gather intelligence were exposed and blocked.
The rapid response of the SSU prevented Russian intelligence agencies from obtaining access to sensitive information about AFU operations, locations, troop movements, and their technical capabilities.
The defensive cyber operation was conducted in cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"From the first days of the full-scale war, we have been repelling cyberattacks by Russian intelligence agencies attempting to breach our military command system and more. The operation we are currently conducting is the cyber defense of our armed forces," stated Ilya Vityuk, Head of the SSU's Cybersecurity Department.
According to him, responsibility for the cyberattacks lies with the hacker group Sandworm, which is under the control of Russian military intelligence.
As a result of the investigation, SSU cybersecurity experts determined that to spread the 'viruses' in the system, the enemy primarily focused on seizing Ukrainian tablets on the battlefield. Subsequently, they planned to exploit the access and programs available on these devices to penetrate the system.
In total, the Security Service identified nearly 10 hostile spy programmes designed to gather information from the system.
The SSU continues to work closely with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and documents the actions of hostile intelligence services, holding those responsible accountable."
