This year, 22 Ukrainian universities were included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, marking the best result for Ukraine in its entire history.
This was reported by Serhii Babak, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science, and Innovation, on Telegram.
“Ukraine has set a new record in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. This year, 22 Ukrainian higher education institutions entered one of the world’s most authoritative university rankings, which is five more than last year,” he said.
Babak noted that this is the best result Ukraine has ever achieved in its participation in the ranking. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the most influential international university rankings, which evaluates not only the quality of education but also the research activity of institutions. The 2026 ranking includes 2,191 universities from 115 countries.
The head of the education committee emphasized that the best-performing Ukrainian university this year was Sumy State University, which entered the 801–1000 group. The second-highest ranked Ukrainian institution was Ternopil National Medical University named after Horbachevsky, which entered the 1201–1500 group.
The MP also noted that the following universities were included in the 1501+ group:
- National Medical University named after O. O. Bohomolets
- Dnipro University of Technology
- Ivan Franko National University of Lviv
- Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics
- Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture
- Lviv Polytechnic National University
- Vinnytsia National Medical University named after M. I. Pyrohov
- National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”
- National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”
- National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine
- Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University
- Oles Honchar Dnipro National University
- Kyiv Aviation Institute
- Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv
- Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies
- Uzhhorod National University
- Carpathian University named after Avhustyn Voloshyn
- V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University
- Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University
“An increase in the number of Ukrainian universities in the Times Higher Education ranking even under conditions of full-scale war is certainly a positive result. At the same time, comparison with global leading universities shows that Ukrainian higher education institutions still significantly lag behind in key indicators, primarily in the quality of scientific research, development of research environments, level of international cooperation, and research funding,” Babak added.
