Beginning July 1, 2025, Turkey will increase the fee for foreign vessels passing through the Bosporus and Dardanelles straits without entering ports. The rate for the “gold franc,” the base unit of calculation, will rise by 15% to $5.83, according to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, as reported by the ministry's press service.

This marks the fourth consecutive annual hike since 2022, following a 39-year freeze during which the rate remained at $0.80. Overall, the rate has increased 7.2 times compared to pre-2022 levels.

According to the minister, over 51,000 transit vessels passed through the straits in 2024, generating $227.4 million in revenue. The government sees this as proof of the importance of regularly updating the fees and maintaining control over the strategic waterway under the Montreux Convention.
