Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler has identified the ongoing war in the Black Sea, changing security dynamics in the Caucasus and developments in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean as key priorities for Türkiye’s defence policy.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026–2027 academic year at the National Defence University, Güler said Türkiye’s strategic location placed it at the centre of developments affecting international security.
He said Ankara was closely monitoring regional threats and pursuing a foreign and security policy combining diplomacy with a proactive approach to defence.
“The ongoing war and security risks in the Black Sea, the emerging balances in the Caucasus, developments in the Middle East, and our rights and interests in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean are priority issues of our security policy,” Güler said.
Regarding the Black Sea, the minister emphasised Türkiye’s intention to maintain what he described as a responsible and balanced approach aimed at preserving regional stability.
He also expressed support for lasting peace in the Caucasus, stronger regional cooperation and efforts to reduce tensions.
