The Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine held a meeting with a German delegation focused on strengthening cooperation in ecology and climate protection.
During the meeting, the parties discussed priority areas of Ukrainian-German cooperation in environmental protection, climate action, and green recovery, particularly in the context of Ukraine’s European integration course. Special attention was given to preparing joint projects within the Green Recovery Platform and coordinating donor funding in the environmental sector.
Among ongoing joint initiatives are projects supported by the German government and the EU through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ):
- “Best Available Techniques and Management Methods (BATMM) for Ukraine” (€10 million, 2019–2025)
- “Support for the Implementation of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Trading System (ETS)” (€3 million, 2017–2026)
- “EU4ClimateResilience” – EU and German government program supporting green transition (2024–2027)
- “Climate Office” (€3.5 million, 2022–2027)
- “Adaptation in the Black Sea Region (PAABS)” (€17.5 million, 2024–2029)
“Germany is a country that not only supports Ukraine’s environmental policy but also invests in its sustainable transformation. Thanks to German projects, we are advancing industrial modernization, launching key climate policy instruments, and aligning legislation with EU requirements. As a leader of the Green Recovery Platform, Germany demonstrates how partnership can simultaneously influence recovery and integration. This is cooperation that already yields results and forms the foundation for Ukraine’s future in the EU,” said Pavlo Kartashov, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine.
During the meeting, Ukraine also presented updated work on adaptation, decarbonization, and legislative approximation to the EU acquis, emphasizing the importance of stable expert support from UNEP. The parties discussed Ukraine’s progress on Chapter 27 “Environment and Climate Change” (Cluster 4: Green Agenda and Sustainable Connectivity), which covers climate adaptation, greenhouse gas reduction, waste management, industrial pollution, nature conservation, water resources, and the implementation of European environmental standards.
At the conclusion, Ukraine and Germany reaffirmed their intention to deepen their partnership aimed at modernizing environmental policy and preparing Ukraine for EU membership.
