Denys Shmyhal and Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson signed a Letter of Intent on partnership in defense innovations, opening new opportunities for the development of Ukraine’s defense industry.

According to Shmyhal, the document also provides a boost for new formats of cooperation and will facilitate Ukraine’s integration into the European innovation and industrial space.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed the development of Ukraine’s air capabilities, including potential deliveries of Swedish Gripen fighter jets. Shmyhal proposed exploring the possibility of jointly developing surface-to-air interceptor missiles and co-producing radar systems.

The ministers also focused on opportunities to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

“We would appreciate the provision of additional missiles for our systems,” Shmyhal said.

He thanked Sweden for its consistent support of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale war. Sweden has already provided over $9 billion in aid and announced plans to allocate another $8 billion over the next two years.

Shmyhal also expressed gratitude for Sweden’s participation in the PURL initiative and highlighted its involvement in the “Danish model,” under which the Armed Forces of Ukraine received 400 deep-strike unmanned aerial vehicles.
