On November 22, 2022, Ukraine became a member of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and can receive grant assistance in the amount of USD 43 million.

“For about 20 years, the Global Partnership for Education has been creating proper conditions to ensure access to education for millions of children. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by russia, GPE offered its support. And thanks to our partners, Ukrainian children and teachers will soon be able to receive important and necessary assistance. Besides, partnership with GPE also means long-term results, transformational changes and formation of a sustainable education system. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of the community and are ready to cooperate,” said Minister of Education and Science Serhii Shkarlet.

The partnership primarily supports the priority areas identified by the Government of Ukraine. In particular, the professional development of teachers, providing psychological support to children and educators, providing educational institutions with educational materials and equipment, as well as supporting the digital transformation of education.

GPE works in close coordination with humanitarian and development partners, including the private sector, to mobilize funding in support of educational needs in Ukraine.

In March 2020, Ukraine received a grant from GPE in the amount of USD 70,000 for the education system to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19. The funds were used to support preschool children of socially vulnerable categories, including children with disabilities. “By joining GPE, Ukraine sends a strong signal that education remains one of country’s priorities despite the extremely difficult circumstances. We commend the Government and people of Ukraine for their resilience and courage and are committed to helping strengthen the education system to provide quality education for millions of children,” said Charles North, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Global Partnership for Education.

For reference

GPE is a joint commitment to overcome the global education crisis by supporting more than 80 low-income countries in transforming their education systems so that children can receive quality education, unlock their potential and contribute to building a better world.

To remind, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine met with Ukrainian children and educators in the Czech Republic.
