The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine is introducing a state compensation scheme to cover part of the losses caused by attacks on vessels.
The announcement was made by the press service of Ukraine's Ministry for Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport, according to its official statement.
To maintain the stability of maritime transport, the government is introducing a mechanism to compensate for damage caused by Russia's armed aggression to vessels operating in Ukrainian territorial waters, along the Temporary Maritime Corridor and in Ukrainian seaports.
The compensation scheme provides for reimbursement of up to 80% of losses incurred by charterers, operators and owners of sea-going and inland waterway vessels where the relevant risks are not covered by insurers.
Compensation will be provided on a non-repayable basis and will cover, among other things, the loss of or damage to vessels, emergency rescue and salvage costs, loss of or damage to cargo, and injuries or other harm suffered by crew members.
Applications for compensation may be submitted within 180 calendar days of the incident.
"Russia continues to deliberately attack Ukrainian ports and civilian shipping in an attempt to disrupt export routes and damage the Ukrainian economy. We have already significantly expanded alternative logistics routes, but they cannot fully replace maritime transport. To ensure the continuity of exports and imports, safeguard food security for more than 55 countries worldwide, and maintain the confidence of international shipping operators, the state is assuming part of the risks associated with the war," emphasised Mykola Kalashnyk, Minister for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine.
