The Ukrainian industrial group Ukrmetallurgprom has issued an open letter to global mining and metallurgical companies, highlighting significant issues such as the destruction of Mariupol's metallurgical plants and logistical challenges. Additionally, the sector faces a critical shortage of skilled workers, with over 20,000 employees having joined the army, as reported by The Northern Miner.

In the letter, Oleksandr Kalenkov, President of Ukrmetallurgprom, proposed the creation of an international advisory board composed of volunteer experts, former and current executives, consultants, and researchers to assist in the industry’s recovery.

"You will be part of a historic effort to rebuild a nation and reshape an industry," Kalenkov stated.

The mining and metallurgical sector is crucial for Ukraine's defense and the recovery of other industries, contributing 11-12% of the GDP and creating additional jobs in supporting sectors. The ongoing war is damaging infrastructure and causing a workforce shortage, prompting Ukraine to seek international support.

Kalenkov noted that the industry has begun hiring more women to address the labor shortage and is leveraging global progress in creating inclusive workplaces. Ukrainian metallurgical companies have also implemented safety measures for their employees and support for military personnel and veterans.

"The reconstruction and transformation of Ukraine’s steel industry is achievable, but only with the backing of the global mining community," Kalenkov said.

He urged miners everywhere to email him via office@ukrmetprom.

“We invite skilled workers, engineers, and visionaries from around the world to join us in this monumental task,” he wrote. “Together, we can create a sustainable future for this important industry. Please join us in working together today for a brighter, stronger and greener tomorrow.”
