Ukrainian food producers have received generators from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Germany. Overall, FAO will provide 245 generators to Ukrainian entrepreneurs.

The FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and with financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, distributed 17 generators with capacities ranging from 27 to 88 kW among food producers and processors in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.

FAO received 395 applications from nine frontline regions of Ukraine from food producers and processors in need of additional power sources.

“We are grateful to our international partners for timely support, which will help our agri-food systems operate seamlessly. It is crucial that, amid constant shelling and infrastructure damage to the energy sector, food producers and processors have the ability to work reliably, especially in de-occupied areas,” noted Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformation, and Digitization, Denys Bashlyk.

As part of a broader FAO initiative, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, and the German government, 245 generators with capacities up to 440 kW will be provided to small and medium-sized enterprises in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions. Of these, 114 generators have already been distributed, with an additional 131 planned for delivery in the coming weeks. They will be received by businesses in livestock, processing, and basic food production sectors such as bread, meat, and dairy.

“Food production is a continuous process. Interruptions would affect food quality. By providing farmers and processors with reliable energy sources, we ensure continuous food production and support local food security. Even during outages, people can consume fresh, nutritious, and high-quality products,” explained FAO specialist in Ukraine for cash and voucher assistance, Mauro Minetti.

This assistance is part of the FAO’s comprehensive Emergency Response Plan for 2024, aimed at protecting agricultural livelihoods and supporting rural populations in areas of Ukraine affected by the war.

“This type of aid is also a significant step towards maintaining economic resilience and providing vital services to local populations. Germany will continue to support Ukraine in developing and restoring its agricultural sector,” said Ansgar Ashfalk, First Secretary and Agricultural Advisor at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The plan includes a wide range of measures, such as providing agricultural resources, supporting livestock, and enhancing food security through the stabilization of production chains. FAO will continue to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s agri-food systems, ensuring that farmers and food producers have the necessary tools to continue production.
