Ukrainian company Grammarly is launching a new tool called Authorship. It will show which parts of a text are written by humans, which are inserted from other sources, and which are generated or edited by artificial intelligence, according to the company.

Grammarly Authorship is primarily designed for the education sector and will be integrated into 500,000 applications and websites.

According to Jenny Maxwell, head of Grammarly for Education, many institutions lack consistent and clear policies regarding AI. Disputes often arise between teachers and students due to inadequate AI detection tools that incorrectly flag student work.

“This lack of clarity has contributed to an overreliance on imperfect AI detection tools, leading to an adversarial back-and-forth between professors and students when papers are flagged as AI-generated. What’s missing in the market is a tool that can facilitate a productive conversation about the role of AI in education,” said Maxwell.

Authorship will allow students to finalize their work before submission and ensure it meets the instructor’s guidelines. It will also serve as support if the work is flagged as plagiarism or AI-generated.

Once activated, the new tool will offer students several ways to view and share the results of their analysis:

  • Authorship analytics displays a breakdown of the different text categories contained in the document, along with overarching document-level analytics such as total time authoring, number of active writing sessions, and more.
  • Authorship report contains the full text of the assignment. The document text is color-coded in the report to show whether it was human-written, AI-generated, AI-modified, AI-edited, or pasted.
  • Authoring replay provides a complete playback showing how text appeared in the document, with stopping points available to analyze where text appeared.

Grammarly will launch this new feature in beta in Google Docs for all its clients starting September 2024, with plans to make it available in Microsoft Word and Pages by the end of 2024.

Grammarly is a Ukrainian company that developed a platform to improve written English. According to the company, it is used by over 30 million people, 70,000 teams, and 3,000 educational institutions.
