Ukrainian fencers claimed individual medals at the European Fencing Championships taking place in Genoa, Italy, showcasing remarkable performances in both épée and sabre events.
Roman Svichkar triumphed in the men’s individual épée, securing the European champion title. In a decisive final bout, the 31-year-old Kharkiv native defeated Italy’s Matteo Garassi, the reigning junior world silver medalist, with a score of 15:11. Although Svichkar is already a two-time World Championship medalist, this marks his first-ever medal at the European Championships.
Meanwhile, Alina Komashchuk added to Ukraine’s medal tally with a silver in the women’s individual sabre event. The Olympic champion from Odesa faced France’s Sara Noutcha—currently ranked fourth in the world—in the final. Komashchuk fell short with a score of 6:15, but her silver marks a personal milestone: it is her first individual medal at the European Championships, and her sixth overall in the tournament’s history.
The European Fencing Championships in Genoa continue through June 19, with Team Ukraine poised to add more victories to their campaign.
Congratulations to our athletes and their coaches! Let’s keep cheering for Team Ukraine in Genoa!
