"All previous security initiatives for the Black Sea, including those from NATO member states, were previously hindered by the 'What will Russia say?' factor. However, now there is no need to ask such questions," stated Vadim Skibitsky, a representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, during a live broadcast on the United News telethon.
"It is time to stop asking Russia, as it is the aggressor and a real pirate in the Black Sea, hindering normal civilian navigation. Therefore, there is a need for a unified position of interested countries, countries in the region, NATO countries, and countries that can provide security guarantees in the Black Sea, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Turkey should also express its stance," explained Vadim Skibitsky.
Addressing Black Sea security issues, the representative of Ukraine's Military Intelligence reminded of the goals of Russia's occupation of Crimea and the threats it has created.
"Both the occupation and the buildup of military potential in Crimea were carried out for two reasons. The first is complete dominance in the Black Sea, and the second is the projection of power into the Mediterranean: the same Syria, the same Africa, and access to the Atlantic Ocean," he noted.
Vadim Skibitsky emphasized that the aggressor's control of the Black Sea airspace and Russian coastal missile systems pose a threat not only to military but also to civilian navigation. Therefore, all interested states should seek effective ways to neutralize Russian military power in the region.
Complete security in the Black Sea can only be guaranteed through the de-occupation of Crimea.
