Valentyn Vasyanovych’s new film To The Victory! will be screened at the Canadian film festival TIFF, according to the festival’s website.

The film will be shown in the Platform Award section — which showcases new international talents and highlights “author films with distinctive directorial visions.”

The dystopian film To The Victory! depicts events unfolding in post-war Ukraine — a country that has won the war but “lost society.” The main idea centers on stories about families broken by war, with much of the action involving Vasyanovych himself — the director tries to find meaning in life through failures at work. Additionally, he lives separately from his wife and daughter, who refused to return to the “war-ravaged country” but still believe that normal times will come.

In total, seven out of eight members of the film crew play themselves, noted Ukrainian producer and ForeFilms co-founder Volodymyr Yatsenko.

“I ran away into the future: I feel more comfortable there. Because today, there are too many conditions I cannot go against for the film to look truthful. The story happens with me and my friends. It’s a comedy. It will be sad, but the film comes out seeming cheerful,” Vasyanovych said in an interview with Suspilne.Kultura.
