Citing "extraordinary circumstances," Google's YouTube unit said it was "pausing a number of channels’ ability to monetize on YouTube." These included several Russian channels affiliated with recent sanctions, such as those by the European Union.

"We are actively monitoring new developments and will take further steps as necessary," Google spokesman Michael Aciman said.

Now Russian state media cannot buy ads on the company's services, such as the Google search engine and Gmail.

In addition, Meta has added a feature whereby people with profiles in Ukraine can prevent those not on their Friends list from uploading and sharing their profile photos or reviewing their posts.

Additional security measures are also being taken for the Messenger app and the WhatsApp platform that install or extend existing message disappearance capabilities.

About Instagram, Gleicher said Ukraine is rolling out a privacy and account security alert related to password security and two-factor authentication.

Earlier, at the request of the head of the Ministry of Digital Development Mikhail Fedorov, tags appeared on Instagram for resources that are controlled by the Russian authorities.

Earlier this week, Meta set up an operations center with experts from across the company, including native Russian and Ukrainian speakers, monitoring and responding to issues.
