Latvia issued an overnight air raid alert in municipalities bordering Russia on 3 November after detecting an unidentified drone, which is believed to have crashed in Balvi Municipality.

According to Latvian public broadcaster LSM, citing the country's National Armed Forces, an orange-level alert was activated in Balvi and Ludza municipalities over a potential threat to Latvian airspace.

The alert lasted approximately 25 minutes and was lifted at 00:33 local time.

Latvian forces deployed interceptor drones, while NATO fighter jets participating in the Baltic Air Policing mission were scrambled in response to the unidentified object.

Preliminary information suggests the drone crashed in Balvi Municipality, near the Russian border.

Military personnel continued searching the area to locate the wreckage and establish the circumstances of the incident.

The drone's origin, type and intended destination have not yet been confirmed by Latvian authorities.
