The Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) have agreed to jointly implement two school reconstruction projects â ECHO4SCHOOLS-UA and Restoring Schools in Ukraine.
These projects, which are being implemented with the support of First Lady Olena Zelenska, will repair and modernise more than 100 schools in 14 regions of Ukraine.
âI am grateful to our partners from UNDP and UNOPS for their cooperation and willingness to work quickly to ensure that the start of the new school year is not disrupted for many Ukrainians. We look forward to deepening our cooperation. Restoring and equipping the educational infrastructure is one of the necessary conditions for Ukrainians to return home.
I would like to express my special gratitude to the European Commission, which has allocated EUR 100 million to rebuild and modernise schools, including through these projects. The Commission will work together with the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development and the Olena Zelenska Foundation to implement the assistance.
We know how important a safe and modern school infrastructure is for Ukrainian families, so with these projects we will not only make things as they were, but also better. That is why both projects put special emphasis on improving the safety of infrastructure, in particular by repairing and equipping bomb shelters,â commented Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development.
ECHO4SCHOOLS-UA: Repair/modernisation of schools in war-affected regions
The project, implemented by UNDP, aims to carry out routine repairs of at least 50 schools in 10 regions of Ukraine.
Preparations are already underway to tender for the first repairs. It is planned to increase this number to over a hundred in the future.
The projectâs budget is about EUR 14 million.
Restoring Schools in Ukraine
The project, implemented by UNOPS, provides for the ongoing repair of schools in 4 regions: Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions.
Fifty-four educational institutions that need to be restored have already been selected. Tender documents are being prepared for 8 facilities.
The project will help more than 20,000 children start the new school year in decent conditions.
The budget is EUR 20 million.
