Israel is increasingly concerned about the "dangerous proximity" between Russia and Iran amid the supply of Iranian drones to attack Ukraine.
Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid stated this in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.
“Part of the work we’re doing has to do with the very dangerous closeness that is being created between Russia and Iran,†he told the Post in an interview on Sunday. “It’s not something we are going to ignore or do nothing about… so what we need to do is reassess on a daily basis and react,†Lapid said.
The Prime Minister said Israel is conducting close consultations with the United States. He also recently spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
When asked what prevents Israel from providing Ukraine with missile defense systems, Lapid replied that he "balances two considerations."
"Firstly, we are on the side of Ukraine. We support them. We just voted at the UN General Assembly, telling the world that we will never accept the annexation of the four regions. We are still the only country in the world that built a field hospital in Ukraine," - he said.
Another consideration is to ensure the continued protection of Israel's national security interests.
"We will actively support Ukraine and take into account the interests of Israel's national security," he added.
Lapid also said that supplying Iranian drones and other weapons to Russia is further evidence that a return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is not viable.
