Beekeepers from Odessa region created a reed apiary
Beekeepers Viktor and Natalya Kotenko from Komarovka village (Lyubashevsky District) developed their own design of beehives with reed side walls. Now their apiary has 160 families in reed hives.
Reed hives are an old Ukrainian tradition. In ancient times Ukrainians made beehives from this material, imitating natural bee nests. In present time such hives are used only by a narrow circle of beekeepers. However, the craftsmen who produce the reed hives are still working. Now the reed hives look more modern and often outwardly no longer look like the ancients, they became a sort of modern garden decoration.
