On the night of June 17 (starting from 8:00 p.m. on June 16), the Russian forces launched 472 aerial attacks on Ukraine:
- 440 strike UAVs of the Shahed type and various decoy drones from the directions of Kursk, Shatalovo, Orel, Bryansk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia. About 280 of them were Shahed drones;
- 2 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles from the airspace over Russia’s Tambov region;
- 16 Kh-101 cruise missiles launched from strategic aviation aircraft over the Saratov region (Russia);
- 4 Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Black Sea;
- 9 Kh-59/69 guided aerial missiles from tactical aviation aircraft over the Belgorod and Bryansk regions (Russia);
- 1 Kh-31P anti-radar missile.
The primary target of the strike was the city of Kyiv.
Ukrainian Defense Forces — including aviation, air defense missile units, electronic warfare and drone systems, and mobile fire groups — responded to the massive aerial attack.
As of 10:00 a.m., preliminary reports indicate that 428 aerial targets were neutralized, including:
- 262 shot down by firepower,
- 166 suppressed or lost due to electronic warfare (EW) systems.
Breakdown of neutralized threats:
- 239 Shahed drones (and other UAV types) destroyed by firepower; another 163 were suppressed or lost via EW;
- 2 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles (1 was lost from radar);
- 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
- 8 Kh-59/69 guided aerial missiles (1 lost from radar);
- 1 Kh-31P anti-radar missile (lost from radar).
Confirmed impacts of Russian aerial weapons were recorded at 10 locations, and debris from downed objects fell in 34 locations.
