Russian forces launched attacks across Ukraine with bombs, missiles, drones and artillery

Russian forces continued large-scale attacks across Ukraine overnight and throughout the day, using guided aerial bombs, missiles, drones and artillery. Civilians were killed and injured in several regions, while residential areas, businesses and critical infrastructure were damaged.

In Sumy region, Russian troops launched a major attack on the city of Sumy with guided aerial bombs. Acting mayor Artem Kobzar said that around 3:00 a.m. on July 17, Russian forces carried out five strikes on central areas and the outskirts of the city. More than 100 windows were shattered in an apartment building, but no casualties were initially reported.

According to regional authorities, Sumy came under nine guided aerial bomb attacks within 24 hours. Earlier strikes hit the outskirts of the city, while later attacks targeted central districts, damaging residential areas and civilian infrastructure. At least 11 people were injured across the region, including residents of Sumy, Shostka, Bilopillia, Seredyna-Buda and other communities. A 4-year-old girl was among those injured after a drone strike near the Sumy–Bilany road.

In Kharkiv region, one person was killed and 14 injured after Russian attacks on Kharkiv and 23 other settlements. The victims included residents of Vysokyi, Zolochiv, Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv and surrounding communities. Russian forces used missiles, drones, FPV drones and other weapons.

In Kharkiv city, drones struck the Kyivskyi, Industrialnyi and Kholodnohirskyi districts. Damage was reported to a garage and a vehicle. Across the region, Russian attacks damaged residential buildings, shops, fuel stations, warehouses, emergency vehicles, agricultural facilities, schools and other civilian infrastructure.

In Zaporizhzhia region, Russian forces carried out 853 attacks on 58 settlements, killing three people and injuring five others, including four children, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

The attacks included 33 air strikes, 551 drone attacks — mostly FPV drones — two multiple rocket launcher strikes and 267 artillery strikes. Authorities received 111 reports of damage to infrastructure, homes, vehicles and agricultural buildings.

In Kherson region, Russian forces attacked 38 settlements with drones and artillery, injuring eight people. The strikes damaged critical and social infrastructure, including four apartment buildings, six private houses, an administrative building, ambulances, buses and private vehicles.

Earlier, another Russian strike on Kherson killed an elderly woman after she was severely wounded when a residential building in the Korabelnyi district was hit.

In Donetsk region, Russian forces killed one civilian and injured 14 others on July 16, according to regional governor Vadym Filashkin. The fatality was recorded in the village of Nadiia. Most of the wounded were reported in Kramatorsk, where Russian forces carried out 13 strikes, including eight bomb attacks. A child born in 2020 was among the injured.

The attacks damaged dozens of civilian facilities across the region. Police recorded 1,350 Russian strikes on Donetsk region over the past day, damaging 60 civilian objects, including 42 residential buildings.

In Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces attacked Dnipro and Nikopol district more than ten times using drones and artillery. A logistics company warehouse in Dnipro was damaged and a fire broke out. In Nikopol district, strikes damaged a private enterprise, a post office and a fuel station. No casualties were reported.

In addition, Russian attacks on Dnipropetrovsk region damaged infrastructure and caused fires in several areas, according to regional authorities. Earlier reports confirmed strikes on Kryvyi Rih and other communities.

Across Ukraine, emergency services and local authorities continue working to eliminate the consequences of the attacks and assess the full extent of the damage.
