NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his readiness to take part in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
He made the statement at the White House at the start of an expanded-format meeting with Trump, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders.
“What you said – ‘I am ready to take part in the security guarantees’ – that is a major step,” Rutte emphasized. “This is truly a breakthrough, and it changes everything. So thank you for that as well,” the NATO Secretary General added.
He also praised Trump’s efforts to “break the deadlock” with Vladimir Putin by starting a dialogue.
“It seems that in February you had your first phone call. And look where we are today. And I think if we play this right, we can put an end to this, and we must do it,” Rutte said, stressing that the killings and the destruction of Ukraine’s infrastructure must stop. “This is a terrible war, so I am full of emotion. Let us do everything possible starting today and do all we can to end it as soon as possible,” the NATO chief urged.
He once again thanked Trump for his leadership, calling it “decisive.”
