In May, the Russian army suffered 35,370 irrecoverable and sanitary losses — roughly the equivalent of three divisions. This exceeds the total size of the armed forces of some European countries. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the year, Russia has lost 197,760 troops on the battlefield in Ukraine — nearly the manpower of ten divisions.
Throughout May, Ukrainian defenders destroyed or damaged 1,391 Russian artillery systems — an average of 45 guns per day. The single most destructive day was May 6, Infantry Day, when 71 artillery systems were taken out. In total, since the start of the year, Russia has lost 6,995 artillery systems in Ukraine.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces destroyed or disabled 140 tanks (equal to about 4.5 tank battalions), 292 armored combat vehicles, 26 multiple rocket launchers, 25 expensive air defense systems, 3,575 military vehicles, and 34 pieces of special equipment. They also downed two planes and one helicopter.
May also saw the highest number of combat engagements in 2025 so far — 5,691. For comparison, January saw 5,087 engagements, February 3,274, March 4,270, and April 4,647.
