The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) uncovered an FSB “mole” in one of Ukraine’s leading energy companies. Following comprehensive operations in the Kyiv region, an IT specialist of the company was detained for directing Russian attacks on critical infrastructure in the capital region.

Investigations revealed that the agent intended to “leak” the coordinates of underground backup centers of his company’s information databases to the Russian forces. These technological storage facilities ensure the uninterrupted functioning of Ukraine’s energy system.

The Russian forces also hoped to obtain geolocations of gas-turbine generators installed for alternative energy supply to Kyiv residents in case the Russian forces damaged the city’s electrical substations.

SSU officers detected the Russian agent in advance, documented his crimes, and detained him. During searches, the perpetrator’s smartphone was seized with evidence of collaboration with the Russian forces.

According to the case materials, the agent received instructions from the FSB through a relative who had previously led a banned pro-Kremlin party in Ukraine and now cooperates with Russian intelligence in the left-bank Kherson region. In September 2022, this relative was charged in absentia by the SSU with high treason.

Based on the collected evidence, the energy company employee was formally charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed during martial law).

The perpetrator is in custody and faces life imprisonment with property confiscation.
