Due to a massive Russian attack on December 23, Ukrainian nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity generation, and there are power outages affecting consumers in eight regions.
This was reported at a briefing by Acting Minister of Energy Artem Nekrasov.
“As a result of Russia’s massive attack on the energy infrastructure, nuclear power plants were forced to reduce their generation capacity. Increasing nuclear power output to nominal levels will happen gradually, as soon as energy workers restore the networks damaged by the enemy,” Nekrasov said.
He emphasized that Russian strikes on the infrastructure that powers the nuclear plants themselves and delivers electricity to the general grid violate nuclear safety standards.
“This must not go unnoticed by the international community. Russia’s policy of energy terror must be stopped,” Nekrasov stressed.
According to the National Energy Company Ukrenergo on Facebook, as a result of the Russian massive attack on December 23, Rivne region is almost completely without power, and consumers in seven other regions are also affected.
“During the night and morning, the enemy carried out another, the ninth since the beginning of the year, massive attack on Ukraine’s energy system. As a result, by morning, consumers in Rivne region were almost completely without electricity. Power outages caused by the attacks were also reported in Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr regions, as well as in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions. Emergency restoration work will begin as soon as the security situation allows,” the statement reads.
In addition, restoration of energy infrastructure in Odessa region continues after several consecutive attacks, with a significant number of consumers still without power. Energy workers are doing everything possible to return damaged equipment to operation as quickly as possible.
Ukrenergo warns that due to the massive attack, emergency power outages are being implemented, and previously announced hourly outage schedules are not valid. Emergency outages will be lifted immediately after the energy system stabilizes.
