In the port of Novorossiysk, SSU underwater drones “Sub Sea Baby” of the Security Service of Ukraine successfully destroyed a Russian Project 636.3 “Varshavyanka” class submarine for the first time in history.

The explosion caused critical damage, effectively putting the submarine out of service, the SSU reported.

“Four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles, which the enemy uses to strike Ukrainian territory, were located on board the submarine,” the SBU noted.

The operation was a joint effort of the 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence of the SSU and the Ukrainian Navy.

“The value of a Varshavyanka-class submarine is about 400 million USD. Considering international sanctions, building a similar submarine today could cost up to 500 million USD. This class of submarines is also known as the ‘Black Hole’ due to its hull’s ability to absorb sound and remain difficult to detect by sonar,” the SBU added.

The Ukrainian intelligence service recalled that the targeted submarine had been forced to remain in Novorossiysk port due to successful operations by the Sea Baby surface drones, which drove Russian ships and submarines out of Sevastopol Bay in temporarily occupied Crimea.
