Russia continues to pressure Belarus, seeking to involve it in the war against Ukraine or use its territory to deploy its troops. At the same time, no strike groups are currently being formed near the Ukrainian border.
This was reported by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, during a television broadcast.
“Speaking directly about the border line, fortunately, we are not recording any unusual situations or provocative actions from the territory of Belarus,” he said.
At the same time, Demchenko noted that this direction, which includes more than 1,000 km of Ukraine’s border with Belarus, remains a potential threat. “Therefore, we must first of all strengthen our defense capabilities in order to counter any threat that may come from the territory of Belarus,” he said.
“We are not recording the buildup of strike groups in the immediate vicinity of our border that would be either already formed or ready for an invasion. However, we must still be prepared for various kinds of provocations aimed, for example, at forcing Ukraine to deploy additional forces there, thereby weakening other, more important directions,” Demchenko emphasized.
According to him, the task of intelligence units and other components of the Defense Forces is to monitor developments deep inside Belarus and assess how the situation may change.
“Russia’s pressure on Belarus does not stop, with the aim of involving this direction. In particular, we cannot rule out either that Belarus could join the war launched by Russia with its own forces, or that Russia could deploy additional forces to this direction at any moment,” the spokesperson added.
