The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a Russian military intelligence agent, commonly known as the GRU, in Kyiv. The suspect was involved in coordinating missile and drone strikes on the city and setting fires at Ukrainian Railways facilities.

The primary targets of the Russians included thermal power plants, electricity transmission line supports, and energy equipment at railway junctions.

The detainee turned out to be a resident of Kharkiv. For his recruitment, the Russian intelligence agency used a Telegram channel where the man was looking for "easy earnings."

On instructions from Russian intelligence, the agent arrived in Kyiv, where he rented an apartment in a high-rise building with a view of a local thermal power plant.

In the temporary residence, the suspect installed a video camera with remote access software that allowed the Russian forces to monitor the energy facility in "real-time."

Following the same instructions, the traitor equipped a "monitoring point" in another rented apartment near the capital.

Additionally, disguised video recording devices, known as "video traps," were set up by the agent to track strikes on power transmission lines.

In this way, the aggressor planned to capture the aftermath of new aerial attacks on Kyiv and simultaneously identify air defense locations by tracking missile "launches" on video.

After setting up the "observation posts," the agent returned to Kharkiv under the guise of visiting his parents, but in reality, he was going to set fire to a relay cabinet on a strategic railway line.

Counterintelligence of the Security Service documented every step of the suspect, and at the final stage of the special operation, apprehended him in one of the rented apartments in Kyiv while he was setting up a new video camera for online monitoring of air attacks on the city.

During searches, phones and video devices with evidence of espionage and sabotage activities in favor of Russia were seized from the detainee.

The investigators of the Security Service charged him under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with property confiscation.
