Ukraine ranks among the top three strongest fencing nations in Europe!

With three medals and third place in the medal standings, the Ukrainian national team concluded the European Fencing Championships held June 14–19 in Genoa, Italy.

The first medal for Ukraine was won by 32-year-old Kharkiv native Roman Svichkar, who earned his debut continental medal and the first individual gold for Ukraine in men’s épée at the European Championships since Vitalii Ageiev’s victory in Krakow in 1994—31 years ago!

Next, the medal relay was taken up by 32-year-old Alina Komashchuk from Odessa, who after five team medals, for the first time stepped onto the individual European Championship podium and became the fifth Ukrainian sabre fencer to win an individual European medal.

The golden finale for Ukraine’s team in Genoa was delivered by Olena Kryvytska, Vlada Kharkova, Inna Brovko, and Anna Maksymenko, who won Ukraine’s first team gold in women’s épée at the European Championships.

It is worth noting that previously Ukraine’s national team has only once managed to win more than one gold medal at a European Championship — in Plovdiv in 2009, when Olga Kharlan triumphed both individually and with teammates Olga Zhovnir, Olena Khomrova, and Halyna Pundyk.

We are proud of our medalists, thank all athletes for their fight, and the coaches for their work.
