The U.S. Central Command officially confirmed on Wednesday that it had transferred cartridges of Iranian origin to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which were confiscated during an attempt to smuggle them to Yemen.
According to the statement from the U.S. Central Command,
"On October 2, 2023, the U.S. government transferred approximately 1.1 million rounds of 7.62mm caliber ammunition to the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
These cartridges were seized back in December 2021 by the U.S. Central Command's military forces on board the vessel MARWAN I, which was transporting them to Houthi rebels in Yemen in violation of a United Nations Security Council resolution.
In July of this year, the U.S. government confiscated the cartridges following a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice.
The statement from the U.S. Central Command added,
"The U.S. is committed to working with our allies and partners to counter the flow of Iranian lethal aid in the region by all lawful means including U.S. and U.N. sanctions and through interdictions. Iran’s support for armed groups threatens international and regional security, our forces, diplomatic personnel, and citizens in the region, as well as those of our partners."
