The State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine and the Geological Survey of Canada have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of geological sciences. The agreement aims to strengthen scientific partnership, modernize geological data, develop Ukraine’s mineral resource base, and attract investment into the country’s mineral sector.
The document provides for the establishment of a Ukrainian-Canadian Coordination Committee on Mineral Resources, which will serve as a platform for implementing joint initiatives, sharing expertise, and introducing modern approaches to natural resource management. The cooperation program is designed for two years.
The partnership covers key areas such as:
- advancing geological research and enhancing the investment appeal of the mineral sector;
- modernizing geological data through digitization, systematization, and translation into English;
- promoting digital transformation, including the creation of an electronic archive of geological maps and metadata;
- jointly studying deposits of critical minerals important to both countries;
- promoting research results among international partners to attract strategic investors.
“Signing this agreement with Canada is a major victory for Ukraine. Canada is a global leader in geological research and sustainable resource management, and our cooperation opens new opportunities for the development of the critical minerals and geology sectors. Together, we will work on the digitization of geological data, improving information management systems, conducting joint laboratory research, developing models, and attracting investors to critical mineral extraction and processing projects. This is a step toward building a transparent and competitive subsoil use market aligned with best international practices and integrating Ukraine into global supply chains,” said Yehor Perelyhin, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine.
The agreement was signed as part of the intergovernmental security cooperation arrangement between Ukraine and Canada, dated February 24, 2024. The economic component of the partnership is coordinated by the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, which oversees the development of strategic industries, including critical minerals.
Cooperation with Canada in the geological sector is aimed at developing a modern and transparent mineral industry, digitizing geological data, and attracting strategic investors — thereby strengthening Ukraine’s economic resilience and energy security.
