Ukrainian company HIMERA and Denmark's GomSpace have launched OBRIA NANO, the first test satellite for a future independent Ukrainian communications network, into orbit and have already begun operating it.
According to a statement from HIMERA, a developer and manufacturer of communications systems, the satellite was launched as part of SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission on 1 October 2026.
"The aim of the initiative is to establish Ukraine's own satellite network, diversify the country's communications channels and reduce its strategic dependence on external infrastructure. The next important stage is to localise the production of satellites and ground terminals in Ukraine. This will enable the development of domestic satellite communications technologies and the gradual expansion of Ukraine's manufacturing capabilities," the statement reads.
