In 2024, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate received 21 reports of operational events at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, compared to 27 reports in 2023.

This is stated in the SNRIU’s report on the state of nuclear and radiation safety in 2024.

"In 2024, 17 reports of operational events that occurred at Ukrainian NPPs and 4 additional notifications were reviewed," the report says.

It is emphasized that the only source of information about operational events at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is occupied by Russian forces, remains IAEA reports, which do not contain the necessary or sufficient information to conduct even preliminary investigations. Energoatom, as the operating organization, records such events based on information the occupying authorities provide to IAEA mission representatives.

According to the report, no cases of exceeding the control or permissible levels of gaseous-aerosol emissions, water discharges of radioactive substances into the environment, or radionuclide content in surface waters were recorded at Ukrainian NPPs in 2024.

However, no information is available regarding the total gaseous-aerosol emission index, water discharges, or the content of radioactive substances in the cooling pond water at ZNPP for 2023–2024. The actual impact of ZNPP on personnel, the population, and the environment can only be determined after the plant returns under the full control of Energoatom.

In addition, in March 2024, a scheduled safety reassessment of ZNPP Unit 3 was supposed to begin to justify the extension of its service life. Due to the Russian military aggression and occupation of the plant site, this work cannot be carried out. Preparations for long-term operation and safety reassessments of Units 1, 2, and 6 of ZNPP have also been halted.
