The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has developed and implemented a unique methodology for using unmanned technologies to effectively destroy Russian forces and military equipment on the battlefield, as well as military sites deep within Russia's rear areas. This also includes countering reconnaissance drones.

Vasyl Maliuk, Head of the SSU, shared these details at the Ukraine. Year 2025 forum. He explained that the SSU uses unmanned technologies in various areas, including at sea, on the front lines, and behind Russian lines. The President of Ukraine tasked the SSU with developing this methodology and tactics for the use of unmanned aerial systems, and for each distance and each range, there are trained operators and appropriate equipment.

For example, drone operations at the front are divided into ranges: up to 20 km, from 20 to 40 km, from 40 to 80 km, and from 80 to 120 km. For striking military targets over 120 km away, the SSU uses long-range drones.

The SSU, in collaboration with the defense forces, has already targeted 48 ammunition depots, weapons arsenals, airfields with military aircraft, and more deep within Russia's territory. A key area of focus has been disabling the Russian oil extraction and refining industries that fund the Ministry of Defense for the continuation of the war. This distinguishes Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries from Russia's missile strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which are considered acts of genocide against civilians.

Vasyl Maliuk also highlighted the SSU's success in countering Russian reconnaissance drones, such as Zala, Supercam, Orlan, and Lancet, using cost-effective FPV drones that cost only 700 USD, compared to the Russian drones worth around 100,000 USD. He described how, in the Kursk direction, over 20 reconnaissance drones were destroyed in a single day.

The SSU has also enhanced its naval drones, turning them into multi-purpose platforms capable of carrying machine gun weapons, FPV drones, and other equipment, as well as conducting remote mining. An example was provided of a recent mission where a Russian barge carrying military equipment was struck in the Kerch Strait, despite continuous fire contact with Russian aviation.

In addition to its work on the frontlines, the SSU also actively counters internal threats, preventing reconnaissance and sabotage activities from Russian intelligence services. Over the past three years, the SSU has exposed 102 espionage networks and initiated over 3,000 criminal proceedings related to state treason.

Vasyl Maliuk concluded by emphasizing the importance of unity in these critical times, stating that the operational situation is under control but dependent on the country's collective strength and resilience.
