In Odessa region, the reconstruction of the main canal of the Nahirnianska irrigation system in the Izmail district has been completed.
The head of the region, Oleh Kiper, announced the news.
The reconstruction covered a 2.6 km section of the canal. The following work was done:

Restoration of the canal’s profile and strengthening of its slopes

Installation of a polyethylene membrane and concrete lining to reduce filtration losses

Replacement of reinforced concrete slabs and sealing of the joints

Dismantling of old Ø1200 mm pipes and installation of new structures
According to Kiper, before the reconstruction, the canal operated at only 45% efficiency, leading to significant water losses and complicating the operation of pumping stations. After the upgrade, the canal’s efficiency has increased to 90%, ensuring stable water supply for agricultural needs.
The reconstruction of the Nahirnianska irrigation system is part of a comprehensive modernization program for irrigation systems in the Odessa region, funded from the regional budget. As a result, irrigated land is expected to expand by 4,800 hectares.
