A judge from the district court No. 422 of the Tagansky District of Moscow has fined the social network Reddit two million rubles under the article on the failure to remove prohibited information (part 2 of article 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). This information was reported to Current Time by the court's press service.
This is the first case of a fine imposed on this social network in Russia. The reason for the fine was the information posted on the social network about the war in Ukraine, which allegedly "discredits" the Russian army, as well as information about the extremist movement "Arrestantky Układ Edin".
In July of this year, a protocol was drawn up on Reddit for refusing to remove "knowingly false information about the activities of the USSR during World War II, extremist information," as well as records "discrediting" the Russian army. Reddit is a popular platform that combines features of a social network and a forum, where registered users can post links to information on the Internet and discuss it.
Earlier, Russian courts repeatedly issued rulings on fines against foreign internet services for refusing to remove content prohibited in Russia. With the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the number of such rulings has increased. Russian courts have fined platforms like Meta, Twitch, Google, Telegram, and Wikipedia.
