Government authorities of Romania, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, in cooperation with Europol, carried out the arrest in Romania of a person suspected of committing high treason by continuously passing on state secrets.

According to the Europol statement, the detainee held two meetings in 2024 and 2025 in Budapest with officers of the Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB). These meetings posed a threat to Romania’s national security.

“Evidence in the case exposed that the individual was involved in the unauthorised disclosure of state secrets to representatives of a foreign power, namely officers of the secret service of Belarus from 2024 onwards,” Europol reported.

The suspect previously held a senior position in the Information and Security Service (SIS) of the Republic of Moldova.

It is stated that the purpose of the meetings in Budapest was to provide the suspect with information in exchange for money and to receive further instructions.

“With Eurojust’s coordination, authorities from Romania, Czechia and Hungary were able to exchange information and evidence and prove the criminal activity of the individual. The Agency also ensured the swift execution of several European Investigation Orders,” the statement said.

Europol emphasized the importance of transnational cooperation in investigating such malicious activities, as suspects may exploit freedom of movement throughout the Schengen area.
