The German Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) has reported an increase and shift in the methods of Russian espionage activities in Germany, reported by DW.

In the annual report published on September 12, MAD noted that Russian intelligence efforts are focused on Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine, including routes for weapon and ammunition supplies and Ukraine’s defensive tactics.

According to counterintelligence, Russian agencies are showing increased interest in the details of weapon supplies and their locations within Ukraine. Previously, their focus was primarily strategic, but it has now shifted to a tactical sphere. Russia’s main goal is to obtain information that could provide it with a military advantage in the war against Ukraine.

Additionally, the report highlights that the threat of sabotage within Germany remains significant. Russian intelligence is showing interest in critical infrastructure and facilities important for national defense.

MAD Chief Martina Rosenberg emphasized that strengthening the Bundeswehr's defensive capabilities is a key task in the face of growing external threats.

The report also pays special attention to military personnel with Russian roots. Some of them have shown troubling support for Vladimir Putin’s policies, raising concerns within German security agencies.

The German Military Counterintelligence Service is the smallest among German intelligence agencies and operates under the Ministry of Defense. It is responsible for protecting the armed forces from espionage and extremism. As of January 1, 2024, MAD employed 2,131 people, an increase of 160 from the previous year.
